It's Alimentary, My Dear Squatson.
Mood:  bright
Topic: Poop
Our Julia is a winsome creature, but we have all observed that her existence pretty much revolves around her alimentary tract at this point in her life. She nurses -- my God, she nurses, all day and all night long. She poops, a LOT. And she sleeps.

Apart from that, she periodically spends bits of time awake, frowning up at us with Hobbity skepticism and making little gurgles and grunts to signal that, you know, she's pooping again.

And newborn poop is strange stuff; it's not much like poop at all, really. The color is like mustard; the texture is best described as seedy; and the smell is like nothing else on earth. Not really unpleasant. Like movie popcorn, maybe, or like curried yogurt. It's one of those good bad smells, like puppy breath. I love the smell of puppy breath. And yes, I love the smell of my daughter's diapers. Crazy, you know. But in an okay way.

One day you're going to read these babymoon posts and, well, just how are you going to feel about them? It will depend on the day, I'm sure. But, today? They're positively endearing.

OMG, you are the first person who has ever agreed with me. Or at least admits it. There is, well, "something" about the smell of newborn diapers. On breastfeeding babies, anyway. It's almost sweet. Almost...pleasant. Not pleasant in a "I'd like to bottle this" way. But pleasant in a "Thank God DH drew the 'You have to change the 2 year old' straw because I don't mind this at all" kind of way. ;)

I agree with you. I don't find the smell of baby poop gross...maybe it is different if you formula feed but breast-babies have a nice smelling poop LOL

Gretchen,
I love your blog. You have such a lovely way with words and such an awesome family. Thank you for sharing your life and your loves with everyone.

And, I totally agree, breastfed baby poop is not yucky at all, just very natural...but give them formula or food and whew...watch out!

I thought baby poop smelled like an Egg McMuffin. I too love that smell, but don't think I'll be breakfasting at McDonald's any time soon. Just had to add my 2 cents worth here!
